FAQ

Is this a work event?

No. It's a social. Half of us work together, half of us don't, and none of us have consulted HR. The usual rules of being a decent human still apply: look after each other, nobody gets left behind, and what happens on the course gets roasted in the group chat, not at Monday's meeting.

Do I need to book or pay anything upfront?

No bookings, no kitty, no deposit. Turn up, buy your own drink at each hole, keep your own score. Bring a card or phone wallet because Pavilion is cashless.

How does the leaderboard work?

Join on the Leaderboard page with your full name and a 4-digit PIN, and add a photo of yourself if you like. The board shows you as first name and surname initial (Eugene D). Then enter your sips and penalties on the scorecard as you go. Scores land on the board within seconds, and everyone's phone refreshes every 20 seconds. Your marker still checks your card at the 19th.

What's the Flight Crew?

Every team gets seven official positions, from Caddie to Tour Commentator. Each role has three side challenges. When a teammate signs one off, your team banks 10 crew points. Most points wins the Golden Clipboard. It's a separate competition, so it never touches your golf score. See the Flight Crew page.

I changed phones or got logged out.

Go to the Log in page and enter the full name and PIN you joined with. Your scores and handicap come back with you. Don't join again under a new name, or you'll end up on the board twice.

I forgot my PIN or signed up twice.

Find Eugene. He can remove the dodgy entry and you sign up again. Don't make a second account to dodge a bad round. We will notice, and it's +3.

Can I bring my actual golf clubs?

No. No bar on the Sunshine Coast is letting 25 people in carrying 7-irons. Inflatable clubs, a golf umbrella or a tee behind the ear are encouraged and earn handicap points.

What if I'm not drinking?

Play the whole course on mocktails, soft drinks or soda water. Same scorecard, same prizes, and frankly a much better shot at the Green Jacket. You're also an honorary course marshal.

I'm running late. Where do I go?

Check the tee times on the course page and head to whichever hole we're on. The site shows "Now playing" on the day. You'll cop +2 on your handicap for missing the 1pm tee-off, so maybe don't.

What's a Mulligan?

A do-over. You get one. Use it to wipe a penalty or replay a hole's score. Burning it on Hole 1 is legal but tragic.

Is the boss playing?

Anyone with Manager or Director in their title starts on +2. Think of it as a luxury tax. Talking shop is +1 for everyone, bosses included.

Can I cheat?

It's golf. Everyone cheats. Get caught and it's +3 plus a public reading of your crimes at the 19th hole. Your marker signs your card, so choose your friends wisely.

Why can't I skol the cocktails?

Because they cost twenty-odd dollars, the bartender made them with love, and we want to get to Hole 9 standing. Hole-in-ones are tap holes only.

What happens if a bar won't serve us?

We thank them and walk to the back-up venue. Bar staff are course marshals, and arguing with a marshal is a lifetime ban from the Open. Anyone individually cut off retires from the round and joins us at the 19th for food and water.

What about food?

Eat a proper lunch before 1pm. That's not advice, it's a rule. There's bar food along the way at 4 Pines, the Surf Club and TAPS, and dinner at the 19th hole.

What do I win?

The Green Jacket (op shop's finest), eternal glory and bragging rights until next year. The Club Sandwich (highest score) wins the honour of organising next year's Open.

How do I get home?

Uber, DiDi or a taxi. Demand spikes late on a Saturday, so book before you're desperate. Nobody drives. If a mate is struggling, someone from their flight sees them into a car.

Can I bring a plus one?

Ask Eugene first. We're capped at about 25 so the bars keep letting us in.

Is Monday a recognised hole?

No. Monday is not a hole. Turn up, drink water, and deny everything.
